Hot tub costs: what to allow for beyond the tub

A showroom price does not tell you what the finished project will cost. The base, access, power and day-to-day heat loss all deserve a place in the budget.

The base comes first

A hot tub needs a firm, level base designed for the filled weight of the chosen model and the people using it. The right solution depends on the property and product; the retailer or a suitable contractor should confirm the specification before work begins.

Delivery and access

Check the full route from the road to the final position. Gate width, corners, steps, low branches and overhead cables can affect whether ordinary delivery is possible or lifting equipment is needed. Ask whether the quote covers kerbside delivery, positioning and commissioning.

13A or a dedicated supply?

Some smaller tubs are designed for a suitable 13A outdoor supply, while larger or more powerful models usually need a dedicated electrical circuit. The choice can affect heat-up time, how pumps and heaters operate together and the installation cost. Confirm the exact requirement with the retailer and a qualified electrician.

What affects running cost

There is no single monthly figure that suits every household. Insulation, cover fit, water temperature, frequency of use, weather exposure, filtration cycles and your electricity tariff all make a difference. A well-fitting cover and sensible temperature settings often matter more than a small difference in the purchase price.

Questions to ask before ordering

  • What is included in delivery, placement and commissioning?
  • What base and electrical supply are required?
  • Can the cabinet be accessed for future servicing?
  • What are the cover dimensions and lifting clearance?
  • Which warranty conditions depend on installation or water care?

Compare ownership, not just features

More seats and jets can be appealing, but they also mean a larger body of water, more space and potentially more energy use. Choose the size you are likely to use week after week, not the largest model that will fit.
